The beginning of December marks a special time for the BILD … the time when we take a number of our members to Online Educa in Berlin to exhibit at one of the largest conference and exhibitions focussing on all matters relating to e-learning in both the educational and corporate worlds.

This year was a great success and the four of members who exhibited along with the BILD were particularly pleased with the interest that they received. A big thank you to

CAPDM www.capdm.com
ALT www.alt.ac.uk/
BTL http://www.btl.com/ and
Scoll-Mentorix http://www.scoll.co.uk/

for their support and we hope to see you with us next year. The BILD is able to provide funding via the UKTI for attending this exhibition so please contact us if you’d like to enjoy the delights of Berlin in the winter next year.

The BILD was also featured at a number of conference sessions. Jack Wills, Honorary Vice President, had the audience in hysterics during his five-minute Ignite session on why HR departments should be outlawed. On a more serious note Jack also spoke about the importance of cloud computing in education and training and chaired two other conference sessions with his usual panache.

I was also kept busy … delivering a workshop in the Business Educa stream on managing talent in multi-generational workforces, hosting a special interest group lunch for the ROLE project and standing in for Luke Lancaster, CEO of Young Pioneers (and the BILD’s youngest Honorary Fellow) at his session on social entrepreneurship and generation Y. Unfortunately Luke was unable to attend the conference as he had broken his collar bone and was not allowed to travel.

One of the highlights of Online Educa for the BILD and our members who exhibit with us is the “beer and chips” reception which has now become one of the must-attend receptions of the event. This typical British fare attracts many visitors to our exhibition stands and provides much-needed refreshment for the exhibitors too!

One of the highlights for me of Online Educa is the quantity and variety of delegates in attendance. This year there were delegates from over 96 countries and it’s always interesting to see the innovative ways that people are using technology to enhance the learning and development process. The conference was particularly successful, no doubt due to the influence of Sarah Wills, the BILD’s previous business manager who was responsible for putting together the agenda – no mean feat considering the number of speakers and sessions to be managed.

The only things I missed this year were the snow there was nearly a foot of it last year, and it was the first time that many of the delegates had ever seen it; and a trip to a Christmas market … there’s never enough time to do everything. Still, maybe next year!
